Autumn may be the prettiest time of year in the United States thanks to a wealth of gorgeous trees from coast to coast which makes choosing the absolute best leaf-peeping spots difficult, but we gave it a try. Here’s what we came up with.
The following areas offer plenty of other events and fun diversions – and cheap flights, too. Click the city name to find deals from your town.
New England
Fly to Boston then the head in any direction for glorious foliage plus old fashioned country fairs, pumpkin and cranberry festivals or even a unique look at Vermont artists at work. And don’t forget all the Halloween events at Salem, just down the road from Boston. More information here.
Pacific Northwest
Fly into Seattle for gorgeous color because they’ve got a lot more than pines in the Evergreen State. Visit scenic lakes and wetlands or hike a public wildlife area. Never been to Mt. Rainer? Great time to go. More information here.
Rockies
Fly to Denver and take a spectacular drive through a windy pass to view the golden Aspens drive or see the colors from an open gondola car pulled by a steam locomotive, but hurry – leaves start turning in September. More information here.
Upper Midwest
Fly to Minneapolis and see the colors of the season from a fall foliage chairlift at Highland Hills Ski Area in nearby Bloomington or simply admire the trees at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Music festivals and harvest events, too. More information here.
Upstate New York
Fly to Rochester or fly to Syracuse and head to the Finger Lakes Region where you’ll find harvest festivals, wine tastings and pick-your-own-pumpkin patches. Tip: Both cities are served by low-cost carrier JetBlue. More information here.
